The Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede (Unexpurgated Edition) (Halcyon Classics) Review
This Halcyon Classics ebook is a modern English translation of Bede the Venerable's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People), originally written in Latin and completed around 731 AD.
Bede (c. 672 - 735 AD) was a monk at the Northumbrian monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth and at Jarrow in England. Little is known of Bede's origins; he may have been of a well-to-do family and gives his birthplace as "on the lands of this monastery," meaning the monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow. At the age of seven, he was sent to the monastery of Wearmouth by his family to be educated by Benedict Biscop and later by Ceolfrith. Bede spent much of life at the monastery of Jarrow, where he was a teacher as well as a writer. He wrote more than sixty books, enjoyed music, and was said to be accomplished as a singer and as a reciter of poetry.
THE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH PEOPLE is a history of the Christian Churches in England, and of England generally. Along with the ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE, it is one of the most important original sources of Anglo-Saxon history.
