Reason to Believe: Cultural Agency in Latin American Evangelicalism (The Anthropology of Christianity)

Reason to Believe: Cultural Agency in Latin American Evangelicalism (The Anthropology of Christianity) Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Evangelical Protestantism has arguably become the fastest-growing religion in South America, if not the world. For converts, it emphasizes self-discipline and provides a network of communal support, which together have helped many overcome substance abuse, avoid crime and violence, and resolve relationship problems. But can people simply decide to believe in a religion because of the benefits it reportedly delivers? Based on extensive fieldwork among Pentecostal men in Caracas, Venezuela, this rich urban ethnography seeks an explanation for the explosion of Evangelical Protestantism, unraveling the cultural and personal dynamics of Evangelical conversion to show how and why these men make the choice to convert, and how they come to have faith in a new system of beliefs and practices.

A Latin American Journey: Insights for Christian Education in North America Review

The U.S. is notoriously ethno- and Eurocentric, often unaware of the rich contributions that are available to it from its own hemisphere. Pazmino addresses that failing and, for people interested in theology and Christian education, explores the wealth of the Latin American experience. From there he poses a model of Christian education influenced by the Latin American viewpoint.

Early Latin America: A History of Colonial Spanish America and Brazil (Cambridge Latin American Studies)

Early Latin America: A History of Colonial Spanish America and Brazil (Cambridge Latin American Studies) Review

Buy From Amazon.com

This book provides a general history of Latin America in the period between the European conquest and the gaining of independence by the Spanish American countries and Brazil (approximately 1492-1825). It is both an introduction for the student at the college level and a provisionally updated synthesis of the quickly changing field for the more experienced reader. The authors' aim is not only to treat colonial Brazil and colonial Spanish America in a single volume, something rarely done, but also to view early Latin America as one unit with a centre and peripheries, all parts of which were characterized by variants of the same kinds of change, regardless of national and imperial borders. The authors integrate both the older and the newer historical literature, seeing legal, institutional, and political phenomena within a social, economic, and cultural context. They incorporate insights from other disciplines and newer techniques of historical research, but eschew jargon or technical concepts. The approach of the book, with its emphasis on broad social and economic trends across large areas and long time periods, does much to throw light on Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well.

The Amnesty of Grace: Justification by Faith from a Latin American Perspective

The Amnesty of Grace: Justification by Faith from a Latin American Perspective Review

Buy From Amazon.com

"This study explores the meaning of justification in the framework of Latin American theology of liberation, which is a particular way of doing theology welcomed by both Catholics and Protestants.  In this theology, the poor, 'oppressed and believing,' constitute the privileged locus of theology.  That is to say, theology is done from their reality of oppression-liberation and their experience of God.  Every great theological theme, every biblical reading, must be reexamined from that angle of vision." From Serra to Sancho: Music and Pageantry in the California Missions (Currents in Latin American and Iberian Music)

From Serra to Sancho: Music and Pageantry in the California Missions (Currents in Latin American and Iberian Music) Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Music in the California missions was a pluralistic combination of voices and instruments, of liturgy and spectacle, of styles and functions--and even of cultures--in a new blend that was non-existent before the Franciscan friars made their way to California beginning in 1769. From Serra toSancho explores the exquisite sacred music that flourished on the West Coast of the United States when it was under Spanish and Mexican rule, delving into the historical, cultural, biographical, and stylistic aspects of California mission music during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Author Craig H. Russell examines how mellifluous plainchant, reverent hymns, spunky folkloric ditties, "classical" music in the style of Haydn, and even Native American drumming were interwoven into a tapestry of resonant beauty. In addition to extensive musical and cultural analysis, Russell draws upon hundreds of primary documents in California, Mexico, Madrid, Barcelona, London, and Mallorca. It is through the melding together of this information from geographically separated places that he brings the mystery of California's mission music into sharper focus. Russell's groundbreaking study sheds new light on the cultural exchange that took place in the colonial United States, as well as on the pervasive worldwide influence of Iberian music as a whole.

Carnival and Other Christian Festivals: Folk Theology and Folk Performance (Joe R. and Teresa Lozana Long Series in Latin American and Latino Art and Culture)

Carnival and Other Christian Festivals: Folk Theology and Folk Performance (Joe R. and Teresa Lozana Long Series in Latin American and Latino Art and Culture) Review

Buy From Amazon.com

With a riotous mix of saints and devils, street theater and dancing, and music and fireworks, Christian festivals are some of the most lively and colorful spectacles that occur in Spain and its former European and American possessions. That these folk celebrations, with roots reaching back to medieval times, remain vibrant in the high-tech culture of the twenty-first century strongly suggests that they also provide an indispensable vehicle for expressing hopes, fears, and desires that people can articulate in no other way.

In this book, Max Harris explores and develops principles for understanding the folk theology underlying patronal saints' day festivals, feasts of Corpus Christi, and Carnivals through a series of vivid, first-hand accounts of these festivities throughout Spain and in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad, Bolivia, and Belgium. Paying close attention to the signs encoded in folk performances, he finds in these festivals a folk theology of social justice that--however obscured by official rhetoric, by distracting theories of archaic origin, or by the performers' own need to mask their resistance to authority--is often in articulate and complex dialogue with the power structures that surround it. This discovery sheds important new light on the meanings of religious festivals celebrated from Belgium to Peru and on the sophisticated theatrical performances they embody.

In this journal of his travels in Bolivia and Peru, Nouwen ponders the presence of God in the poor, the challenge of a persecuted church, the relation between faith and justice, and his own struggle to discern the path along which God is calling him. "Nouwen puts his inexhaustible curiosity and hunger for religious experience gladly at the service of a worldwide audience."--The Boston Globe.
