Latin Commentaries on Revelation (Ancient Christian Texts)

Latin Commentaries on Revelation (Ancient Christian Texts) Review

Interest in the book of Revelation in the Western tradition is stronger and earlier than that in the East. The earliest full commentary on the Apocalypse is that of Victorinus of Petovium written in the mid to late third century by the earliest exegete to write in Latin. Victorinus interpreted Revelation in millennialist terms, a mode of interpretation already evident in works by Irenaeus, as well as in modest allegorical terms.

Caesarius of Arles wrote in the early sixth century and offered a thoroughgoing allegorical-ecclesial interpretation of the Apocalypse. Apringius of Beja in Portugal, writing in the mid sixth century, drew on Jerome's edition of Victorinus's commentary yet understood the seven seals christologically as the incarnation, birth, passion, death, resurrection, glory and kingdom.

Bede the Venerable, who died in 735, is the last commentator to be included in this collection. Characteristically, he passes on commentary from earlier exegetes, here including that of Augustine, Gregory the Great, Victorinus, Tyconius and Primasius.

William Weinrich renders a particular service to readers interested in ancient commentary on the Apocalypse by drawing together these significant Latin commentaries. The work of translating these texts was begun in preparing the volume on Revelation in the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. We are indebted to William Weinrich for completing this work with his able and fresh translation and notes on these texts.

Origen: Homilies 1-14 on Ezekiel (Acw) (Ancient Christian Writers)

Origen: Homilies 1-14 on Ezekiel (Acw) (Ancient Christian Writers) Review

Before he launched into his own career as an interpreter of Scripture, St. Jerome (345-420) was encouraged by St. Gregory Nazianzen to immerse himself in the writings of the Greek Fathers and especially in those of Origen of Alexandria (185-254), considered to be the most important ancient exegete. Jerome strove to assimilate Origen s hermeneutical perspective and make it his own, translating several of Origen s works into Latin. The Homilies on Ezekiel were among the most important of St. Jerome s translations.

In these homilies Origen endeavors to show his audience in the church of Caesarea how the text of Ezekiel points to and prefigures Jesus Christ and the church. Following in the footsteps of St. Paul (Rom 15.4: For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction... ) and Hebrews (10.1: For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come... ), Origen looks for the reality of Christ symbolized in the shadowy words of the prophet Ezekiel. The result is a deeply moving, reverent, and edifying exposition of the Old Testament prophet in a manner that doubtless would have been received with pleasure by St. Paul himself.

The homilies are of intrinsic interest on important Christian themes such as persecution and martyrdom, purification, justification, progress, Church unity, God s passionate love for humanity, Catholic versus heretical doctrine, and freedom of the will. The present volume offers the first published English translation of the fourteen homilies, along with Jerome s preface.

Evagrius Ponticus (ACW 59): Ad Monachos (Ancient Christian Writers)

Evagrius Ponticus (ACW 59): Ad Monachos (Ancient Christian Writers) Review

Jeremy Driscoll makes available for the first time in English the text known as Ad Monachos, by Evagrius Ponticus (345-399), who was among the first of the desert fathers to articulate in writing the wisdom of the monastic movement. The text is a collection of 137 proverbs composed in a style that imitates the proverbs of biblical Wisdom literature. Besides offering the Greek text and an English translation, Driscoll examines its structure and style, and offers commentary on different proverbs.

This noteworthy book: --is the only major commentary in any modern language on Ad Monachos. --demonstrates how the proverbs in their order form a rich spiritual architecture. --is presently the single most comprehensive book in English on Evagrius.
